What the password generator is for
The password generator makes a strong, random password in your browser. Choose the length and which kinds of characters to use, leave out characters that look alike if you will type the password by hand, and copy it with one click. It uses your browser's cryptographic random numbers, makes sure every chosen kind of character appears, and shows roughly how much randomness the password has. The password is never sent anywhere or stored; when you close the page it's gone.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a password be?
At least 12 characters, and 16 or more for important accounts such as email and banking. For a password you never type, because a password manager fills it in, 20 or more costs nothing.
Is it safe to create a password on a website?
On this page it is: the password is made by your own browser and isn't sent or saved anywhere. Avoid generators that make the password on their server. Your password manager's built-in generator is just as good.
Is a passphrase better than a random password?
A passphrase of four or more random words is easier to type and remember and can be just as strong. A random password packs more strength into fewer characters. For passwords a manager fills in, random characters are simplest.
