What the phone number lookup is for
The phone number lookup checks a number against the numbering plan of every country and tells you whether it can be a real number, which country it belongs to, its calling code and the kind of line: mobile, landline, toll-free, premium-rate, VoIP and so on. It also writes the number in its international, national and E.164 forms, ready to save or to dial from abroad. Use it to understand a missed call from an unknown country, to tidy a contact list or to check a number before you put it on a form. It runs in your browser; the number isn't sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Which country is this phone number from?
Type the number with its + and calling code, such as +44 20 7946 0958, and press Check. The country and the calling code are shown first. If the number has no +, choose the country it was written for.
Can I find out who owns a phone number?
Not here, and not legally from public sources: owners' names aren't published. The tool shows what the number itself tells you: its country, line type and format.
Should I call back a missed call from abroad?
Check the number first. If it is a premium-rate number, or from a country you have nothing to do with, don't call back: missed calls that tempt you into an expensive call are a common scam.
Is the number I type sent anywhere?
No. The numbering rules come with the page, and the check runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else.
